What pain relief tablets are good for trapped nerves in neck/shoulder. Please help?

My dad has had a bad shoulder since Wednesday, he went to the doctor on Thursday and he told him he had a trapped nerve and prescribed him Tramadol, but this has many side effects and doesn’t really numb the pain for him.
He is in a lot of agony so i wondered if anyone has experienced this and/or has any advice on pain relief and if you know what sort of time it could take to subside. I will pass on any answers
Thank you !

Chosen Answer:

Tramadol is a horrid drug and can cause side affects that are very unpleasant.
Often they will prescribe a mix of drugs for nerve pain which work much better but this involves prescription strengh Co codamol and others that take time to work. Which is why they Doctors go for a hard hitting one to start with.
Might actually get some relief from a painkiller that is an anti inflammatory as well. A pharmacist will be able to help you and advice you on the drugs sold from behind the counter.

In theory as it is a trapped nerve it should be a short term problem and is best relieved by being proactive and paying to see a physiotherapist or chiropracter as quickly as possible.

How long does it usually take for a person to get addicted to vicodin?

I have been taking vicodin for two weeks now and I think I may be addicted to it. What can I do to help myself and how can my doctor help me? serious answers only please. Thank You!

Chosen Answer:

I’m a nurse. I would talk to the doctor about it. Your’e not far along as many people. You can simply chose not to take them. Most people take them for a very long time and later realize they have a problem. I think you are fine. It took you only two weeks and you realized, hey this could be a problem. My advice is to discontinue the use of it . You will later noticed that you caught the problem right before the addiction happened. Your’e fine, after all this isn’t what you wnat to do and your’e not in denial, that’s great. Be strong during this time, you can do it, I know you can.

What pain relief did you have in childbirth?

I am only about 5-8 weeks along and already thinking about this. What pain relief did you have and did it help? also what are you views on having an epidural for a calm birth? Thanks for all answers x

Chosen Answer:

i had an epidural both times. the first was very unpleasant- couldnt feel my legs at all, made me very jittery and shaky, and by the time i was almost ready to push, it had mostly worn off. still had a LOT of pain at that point, but baby came out fine. afterwards though, when i finally stood again, i was super dizzy and nauseous.
the second time, complete 180. epidural was perfect, numb enough to dull the pain, but i was still able to move my legs on my own, could feel thing, etc. had NO pain, no dizziness, no nausea. was even able to laugh and joke between pushes. very relaxing calm enjoyable birth. plus the second baby was 9 lbs! it was excellent!

How long does it take for vicodin to kick in and how long does it last?

I was just prescribed vicodin for a pinched sciatic nerve. My doctor said to take it at bedtime, but I want to make sure it is working by the time I lay down. But, I don’t want to take it too early because I want it to last through the night. She gave me HYDROCODONE/APAP 5MG/500MG TABS. Thanks.

20 – 30 minutes, and 3.5 to 4 hours

During Labor is there any other type of pain relief besides an epidural?

I am allergic to codiene and the epidural so is there any other type of pain relief i can get during labor?
With my first child i was in labor for 16 hours!! I am only 13 weeks pregnant with my second and just want to be prepared this time if the pain gets to be too much!

Chosen Answer:

Sure you can try the gas, but it can make you spin out and a little dizzy but it is short lasting so you will feel normal again within minutes. Also you can either have pethidine or morphine, i’m not sure if they contain codeine so you might have to check on that. But those are the 3 most common pain relievers apart from an epidural to use during labour and delivery. Hope this helped..

How can I prevent Vicodin from giving me a migraine?

I take vicodin because of my back but it gives me a really bad headache almost like a migraine. The very first time I took it I felt really good and got rid of my pain but ever since than I’ve gotten a splitting headache and don’t feel much pain relief at all. I could ask my doctor but he’s a total dushbag and I don’t want to.

Chosen Answer:

You might need to try another drug. You need to talk to your doctor, so he can try something else. There’s tramadol, a non opiod that works for me.

How many days after a wisdom tooth removal is it safe to take Vicodin?

I had one of my wisdom teeth removed yesterday, and the doctor prescribed Vicodin as a painkiller, to be taken every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain. (Although I’ve tried to bear the pain as long as possible after that time frame to avoid taking too much.) How many days do patients typically need Vicodin? I’m pretty nervous about the side effects of strong prescription drugs, so I’d just like to know when I won’t need them anymore! Thank you!

Chosen Answer:

Generally after a few days the pain goes down to a level where over the counter drugs can handle it. So you know, though, you don’t have to take the Vicodin — that is optional. You can take it as you need it, but you can use ibuprofen instead (unless you can’t take ibuprofen for some reason). You might want to try ibuprofen and see how it works for you. Sometimes, for some people, they won’t need narcotics for pain relief and just use over the counter drugs. If it doesn’t cut the pain out enough, you can always take another Vicodin (they can be taken together).
