When trying for a vbac should you avoid all pain relief and induction to labour to increase your chances?

I am 24 weeks pregnant and i have a 3 year old son i had an emergancy c-section with him due to failure to progress my waters broke at 38wks with no contractons so labour was induced. This time I really want a vaginal birth but I have had little advice from my midwife or consultant. They have agreed I can try for a vbac but I have not been giving any information. I have read on the net not to be induced and stay clear of epidurals and other pain relief as they increase the risks and will lead to another c-section. Does any1 have any advice or has any1 achieved a vbac.

Chosen Answer:

i have never known anyone trying for a VBAC to go without pain relief, it sounds like a good idea in theory, but in reality you will need some pain relief.
have a look at this FAQ website about VBAC, it’s the best one i’ve read

Anyone had any luck with alternative methods of pain relief during labor?

im 20 weeks probably a little early to really have to worry about a birth plan but i know i would like to try to do it without epidural/demerol anyone have any experience with alternative methods of pain relief like lamaze/accupressure/hypnobirthing etc. ? did you find them effective or a waste of time and would reccomend against them?

Chosen Answer:

Didn’t use any of those methods or take any classes and went completely natural. Just go with the flow of the day(s), moan/groan through each contraction, walk when you can and lay down when you need to rest. Your body will let you know what you are capable of and trust yourself that you can do it if you have your mind set on natural – our bodies are designed for childbirth! Each pain has a purpose and brings you closer to seeing your beautiful baby. Good luck!

How soon after having 3 beers can I take Vicodin for back pain?

I had 3 beers while BBQing tonight and am considering taking a Vicodin for back and shoulder pain. All 3 beers were consumed in about a 3 hour time period, I finished my last beer about 2 hours ago, and I don’t feel any effects/drunkenness from the beer that I’ve consumed because I was eating the whole time. I DO NOT plan on drinking anymore alcohol tonight. Will taking a Vicodin now be OK?

Chosen Answer:

Take your Vicodin. Just expect to be really woozy. And only take ONE.

There’s no reason you should be in pain, but don’t make a habit of drinking and popping pills, okay? Today is an exception.

What are some of the side affects of coming down from a four year addiction to vicodin?

I have been on vicodin for four years for chronic pain.
I have been forced to reduce my pills greatly for an upcoming surgery. I have not felt this bad in a long time. Is this normal?

Chosen Answer:

Yes. It’s completely normal. Your body has become physically addicted to vicodin and now needs a certain amount of the drug just to feel normal. You are now having withdrawal symptoms. Personally, I think these symptoms will last longer than 4 days, but with that said, each day will get better and better, with less severe symptoms. I promise you it will get better….just keep up the good work….I know it’s tough.

What are the pain relief options?

I am going to give birth in about 8 weeks, and I really can’t handle pain, what pain relief options are there? The more the better please. Also what is the best in your experience?

Chosen Answer:

one word: EPIDURAL! With my first I had only a shot of Stadol, they didn’t get there in time with my epidural. With my second, I made sure I got the epidural in time; it made all the difference in the world!

What are the odds of a person with vicodin and soma getting off of them in a rehab facility that they chose?

The person has chronic pain after 2 neck surgeries within last 4 years, but realizes that she is going to lose her life and family family if she continues to stay stoned all of the time (especially on the soma). She chose a facility, but I’d like to know if others have experience in this area. I think she was taking about 10 soma and 15 – 20 vicodin, but hard to tell since addicts lie so much. Any experience in this area or data would be great. Thank you?

Chosen Answer:

Pain management and addiction can be tricky. If she wants to get clean, by all means, support her. But she will need alternate pain treatments. I would suggest she try accupunture, various physical therapies/messages, and naturopathic treatments. I’m sure it would be helpful if you got the information on local treatments for her.

Good luck.

Vicodin..??

How do you get a prescription of them???

they are the only thing that helps my back pain! But what if the doc tries to give me something else??

Chosen Answer:

I know how you feel it seems every time I throw my back out they always make me feel like I’m faking it to get pills……unfortunately alot of people do that. Vicodin is an addictive narcotic doctors don’t like to prescribe it for just moderate pain. I have found that my lower back pain is muscle related and my doctor prescribed me muscle relaxers which have helped a ton. Maybe just ask your doctor for a small prescription of Vicodin only for when you really need them.

what in your opinion is the best pain Relief during labour?

Im not decided on if i will have pain relief or what type i will choose yet. I still have a long time to go but i feel i should really start thinking early to be sure of my decision.

On my first child i had no pain relief because it was too late.

Everyones opinions are welcome (good and bad) and really appreciated, i need all the help & advice i can get.

Thanks in advance x

Chosen Answer:

These were the options given to me.

Epidural
Gas and Air(the laughing gas at the dentist office)
Demiral
Water birth- the warm water is said to help relieve pain
Walking through contractions
Seating on a birthing ball-(big bouncing ball that you bounce on during contractions)
Getting on all fours and have someone rub your back
Meditation while listening to gentle calming sounds
Yoga(don’t quite know how but they suggested it)
Scream therapy(scream before contractions then during contraction you should be all screamed out and the pain will be less) I laughed my a** off when my midwife told me this one.
Lastly positive thinking (think it doesn’t hurt and it won’t hurt) This one did not work for me but maybe will work for you.

Hope you have a nice delivery.
