if i vomit 45 minutes after taking strong period pain relief medication can i take another dose?

I had really bad period pain this morning and took some strong period pain relief medication but 45 minutes later I threw up, the medication seems to have helped a tiny bit but I really need more relief. Can I take the dose again or could that do more harm than good?

Chosen Answer:

Nausea and vomiting are two of the most common side effects of opioids such as hydrocodone, codeine, oxycodone, and morphine.

Most of the medication has already been absorbed in 45 minutes, so it would not be advisable to take another dose until 4-6 hours after taking the first pill.

To help with the nausea and vomiting, you can take Dramamine or Benadryl. These medications work very well to treat and prevent nausea and vomiting from opioid painkillers. They will make you quite a bit more drowsy however, so don’t take it if you need to drive, operate machinery, or anything else that would be dangerous if you are drowsy.

Non-drowsy alternatives would be Pepto-Bismol or cola syrup (available at any pharmacy). Mint also works well — try some mint tea.

How do you kinow if you are addicted to Vicodin?

I had a serious surgery on my foot 6 months ago and I have been taking Vicodin ever since. I know I still need it because my pain gets pretty bad sometimes when the medicine wears off. But, when the time comes and the doctor says I don’t need anymore, what’s going to happen to me?
I forgot to tell you that I am afraid to ask my doctor because he will think I need to get off of it and I’m not ready!

Chosen Answer:

If you feel that you need to take the vicodin to live. He should wean you off of it. Maybe you should see a pain management Doctor. 6 months is a long time for u to be still having alot of pain in that foot. Its possible that your body has become dependant on the vicodin. Which is different than addiction.
Addiction hapens when u take it when u dont need it, u take it for the high. Dependancy happens because u have been on it for so long and your body is used to having it. So that is what you will have. your doc. will need to wean you off slowly to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
I personally think u need a pain med that last longer than the vicodin, especially if u are having alot of pain in that foot. Could be u have some nerve damage. I suggest seeing a pain specialist.

pain relief?

hi i have a really bad ear infection its painful im taking prescription eardrops and tylonal extra strength pills but im almost out. before i send someone to the store, does tylonal or advil work better?

Chosen Answer:

First you need to know if it is inner (middle) ear or outer ear infection. A good way to tell is outer ear infections come with greater pain and even the lobe of the ear is very sensitive. A middle ear infection may be accompanied by dizziness, pain, ringing in the ears even nausea. Usually the middle ear infection is the result of allergies or viruses or bacteria, while the outer can be a bacterial infection or even swimmers ear, Swimmers ear is probably the most painful and is caused after swimming .
I listed general treatments for both, it is best to have a MD diagnose. I’m a nurse and just sharing what I know, only an MD can diagnose. Not to scare you but if you let a middle ear infection go untreated you could develop some hearing loss

If you have a middle ear infection you need to take DECONGESTANTS AND a NASAL SPRAY , prescription kinds like Flonase work best. But any nose spray will work to help move the fluid out. The decongestant will help loosen the fluid. Ibuprofen , which is Advil works best as it relieves inflammation (swelling) which is where the pain comes from. If it is an outer ear infection you may need antibiotics, for now get SWIMMERS EAR and earache relief drops, no swimming and watch water exposure in the shower.

I would really advise seeing an MD again
Hope this helps

Sorry I missed the part about the prescription ear drops, definately use Ibuprofen based pain pills, MOTRIN is my favorite and ask your MD if you can use earache relief drops, sold everywhere.

How do you prevent from getting nauseous when taking vicodin?

I’ve been taking vicodin the last couple weeks because i hurt my hand pretty bad. I have to take more now because my tolerance is increasing but now i get sick sometimes when I take it. I’ve tried taking it after a meal, eating it with crackers, and drinking it with milk but I don’t always have food available. Any more ideas on how to keep from getting sick? or on how to stop my tolerance from increasing?

Chosen Answer:

You said you have to take more now? It sounds like you are taking more than the recommended dose and that can surely cause Nausea. Vicodin, is a very powerful pain killer! You need do be real careful when taking it and you have to take it the way it is prescribed. Vicodin can cause Liver Damage if not taken as prescribed!!! If you are not really careful, you may end with Liver Damage, you can possibly overdose on it, you can become addicted to it, and taking more of it, will build up a resistance to it and it won’t work anymore, which is what is probably happening now, if you have to take more. You really need to see your Dr. If you are taking more than the prescribed dose, please Stop! Your Dr. may be able to give you something else, that will be more effective and longer lasting for helping relieve the pain. Have you tried eating something FIRST, waiting about a half an hour and then taking the Vicodin. If not, I would try taking the regular dose that way, and see if it makes you Nauseous. Hope you feel better!

How long does it take to withdrawal from Vicodin ?

My boyfriend has been addicted to Vicodin for 2 years. He stopped taking them about 3 weeks ago.He has shown little improvement in some withdrawal symptoms.High anxiety and complains of constant pain in the nerves of both him arms.Does anyone have any knowledge if this is still part of the withdrawal process or something physiological?

Chosen Answer:

He is experiencing PAWS (Post Acute Withdrawl Syndrome)- it will probably last only another week or so but can last up to 6 months.

The pain he is feeling is actually mental- his brain is screaming out for more vicodin

Tell him to hang in there- it will get better I promise! My drug of choice was alcohol but I was taking vicodin for about a month and had ‘phantom’ back pain after I stopped. It went away within 3 or 4 days but your bf has been on it longer so it will take time. He should probably attend AA or NA meetings when he is up to it.

Why would a drug screen show negative for Vicodin when I have taken several pills daily for 2 years?

My brother has been taking Vicodin several times a day for 2 years for a herniated disc. The pain clinic he attends requires routine drug screening to make sure the pills are being taken and not sold on the street. He takes them, but for some reason he has failed every urine test they have given him. Any ideas?

Chosen Answer:

You can buy a drug screen test at any drug store. The tests that they have now are VERY positive, I would ask and find out if he is telling the truth about taking them and not giving them to friends or whatever. It sounds kind of fishy to me.

Chosen Answer:

You should be fine. It’s okay for short term use, and I can’t imagine getting addicted to it while just taking it for a week or two.

I am taking vicodin for recent surgery. How long does the drug stay in your system?

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth pulled yesterday. The doc gave me vicodin for the pain. I am taking 3 pills a day. I’m curious how long it stays in your system because I want to get pregant, but want to make sure the drug is out of my system before trying.

Chosen Answer:

Vicodin is actually safe to take during pregnancy and my friend was prescribed it at 8 months after she had to get her appendix removed. You shouldn’t worry about any adverse effects from this particular drug.

However, if you are looking to have a completely natural pregnancy, that’s great, and in that case, hydrocodone stays in your system for only 3 to 5 days.

Good luck!

my father is taking warfarin and wonders what pain relief he can take for headache?

he said that most standard pain relief says not to take if currently on warfarin. Any ideas?

Chosen Answer:

Fioricet helps for migraines. I take two tablets everyday. It’s best to get them filled generic at Walmart. They give you thick dull blue colored pills. Walgreen’s give you different fioricet that doesn’t work as well.
