Is any type of pain relief during labour good or are there too many side affects?

Has anyone had pain relief ie. epidural or pethadine during labour and was it good?

Chosen Answer:

I had an epidural with both of the deliveries of my sons. A lot of people are scared of them because they hear all these “horror stories” about them, which aren’t true… Most of the “horror stories” you hear are about Spinals… Which were an older form of pain relief… The epidural will basically make you do dumb from the waste down… You still feel the pressure and some pain but it definitely takes some of the pain away! There was no question whether or not I was going to have them, I wanted to be able to enjoy the births of my sons as much as I possibly could with out being in horrible pain… Good Luck!

Why are some people against using pain relief in labour?

There seem to be 3 views on this issue. The first is that all pharmaceutical pain relief is bad, and that mothers that use is are selfish. The second view is that moderate pain relief is fine. The third is that the more medication you can get the better.

My question is this – to those who hold the first view – why are you so opposed to using pain relief? It doesnt harm the baby, and makes the expectant mother’s job easier, thus making the babies life easier, right? Or am I wrong on this?

If it was harmful to the baby, surely they wouldnt prescribe it. SO why NOT use pain relief?

I particularly want to hear from expectant mothers or others who oppose the use of pain relief.
i am pregnant with my 2nd child. With my first i didnt know i was in labour (long story) so i didnt go to hospital until v.late, and by then it was too late for epidural. The contractions were unspeakably painful, so much so that i just pushed too early, in an attempt to end the agony, and i ended up tearing in 3 places … and for a month i couldnt pee without being in agony. I was traumatised by the whole experience and am now morbidly fearful of going into labour again…. i feel like crying now just thinking about the whole thing

Chosen Answer:

well, i plan on getting something if need be, but i can say i went to my friends birth, and she was sober whne i got ther and in pain so they gave he rdrugs and it slowed the babies heart rate way down, so that all the nurses were running around.. they in my opinion gave her too much, so i disagree with what you said about “If it was harmful to the baby, surely they wouldnt prescribe it. ”

What are the different ways to take Vicodin?

What are the different ways that vicodin is taken; whether it would be doctor’s instructions or in an abusive manner?

What are the side effects of the various ways of use?

When does it become dangerous?

Chosen Answer:

Vicodin is a powerful narcotic that is extremely addictive. It’s dangerous if it isn’t taken as prescribed.

People who need the drug for pain get pain relief.
People who take the drug recreationally get a high from it.

The problem with illegal use/abuse is that it has made the medical community reluctant to prescribe it so people who may really need it for pain relief aren’t getting it.

Addendum: The generic name for the narcotic ingredient in Vicodin is hydrocodone, not oxycodone. Oxycodone is the generic name for the narcotic ingredient in Percocet/Percodan and Endocet. The time released type of oxycodone is known as OxyContin.

How long does it usually take for a person to get addicted to vicodin?

I have been taking vicodin for two weeks now and I think I may be addicted to it. What can I do to help myself and how can my doctor help me? serious answers only please. Thank You!

Chosen Answer:

I’m a nurse. I would talk to the doctor about it. Your’e not far along as many people. You can simply chose not to take them. Most people take them for a very long time and later realize they have a problem. I think you are fine. It took you only two weeks and you realized, hey this could be a problem. My advice is to discontinue the use of it . You will later noticed that you caught the problem right before the addiction happened. Your’e fine, after all this isn’t what you wnat to do and your’e not in denial, that’s great. Be strong during this time, you can do it, I know you can.

Has medical marijuana reduced the reliance on opiates for pain relief in states that have medical mj?

Is there any way to know?

If marijuana is used for pain relief (as people say), has there been any drop in the number of prescriptions written for opiates like hydrocodone, vicoden, etc.?

Chosen Answer:

Unfortunately, no it hasn’t, at least where I live! I live in California, where marijuana for pain is legal, but the use of Vicodin and Oxycodone (Percocet) is at an all-time high! They’re having so much trouble with overuse of these drugs that they’re starting to prosecute the doctors writing the scripts.

I have chronic pain myself, and find mj extremely ineffective, so I don’t use it. I think many people feel the same – I know several people on mj that also take other narcotics with it (vicodin, etc.) but don’t know too many people who have said it reduced their reliance on other pain meds.

How would you compare Naproxen to Hydrocodone for pain relief?

I recently had some Hydrocod-APAP 325mgs from my motor vehicle accident, but recently ran out. I found some Naproxen 500mg in my medicine cabinet and wanted to ask experienced people’s opinions on how the pain relief feels different.

I understand that Hydrocodone is an opiate analegic and Naproxen is an anti-inflammatory, but I would still like to see how people compare the 2.

Chosen Answer:

You can’t compare them,, they are different and they effect your body different. One is for pain and the other is for inflammation.
Here is a good link you should check out for Rx info.

http://pdrhealth.com

And the 325 you are talking about in the hydrocodone is the Tylenol in it not the narcotic. You probably meant 5/325 which is 5 mg. of hydrocodone. I take hydrocodone, just a different strength every day for a spine injury

And I agree with the RN. If the naproxen provides pain relief you will be far better off taking it. Good luck

How bad is it really to take Vicodin with alcohol?

I’m taking vicodin for a popped disk in my back and the vicodin bottle says all over it “do not take with alcohol”. One of my friends say this is really only that bad for old people, i’m 26. I also heard that you can drink a beer or two and get really wasted on vicodin. So i’m thinking to just not drink a lot. Maybe have a couple beers tonight. I’ll bet that 6 beers with vicodin, i’d get horribly trashed.

Chosen Answer:

Or mildly deceased.

Don’t do this.

VICODIN???????????????

i got back from the doctors and they prescribed vicodin for my pain. How does vicodin make you feel? Am i going to get addicted to it? I know people that have been:(

Chosen Answer:

SIDE EFFECTS:

Side effects for Vicodin are most commonly upset stomach, nausea, and altered mental status (eg. dizziness, light headedness). Other more rare side effects include allergic reaction, seizures, clammy skin, severe weakness, dizziness, hyperventilation, unconsciousness, jaundice (yellowing of eyes or skin), unusual fatigue, bleeding, bruising, stomach pain, constipation, dry mouth, decreased appetite, muscle twitches, sweating, hot flashes, itching, tinnitus, hearing loss, decreased urination, and altered sex drive. Vicodin also has depressant effects on the central nervous system. However, some of the less mundane effects can be desirable effects that are sought after by some. Those effects include euphoria and drowsiness, as well as slowing of the pulse. Unlike NSAIDs, Paracetamol does not cause ulcers. Liver damage can manifest ranging from abdominal pain to outright liver failure, and can necessitate a liver transplant to avoid death. Paracetamol dosages should never exceed 4g a day; this is especially important and may be a smaller number when dealing with mixed drugs like Vicodin. It is imperative that users of this drug follow physician prescribed dosages.

ADDICTION:

Tolerance to this drug may develop rapidly, especially if it is misused. This tolerance will usually manifest itself by analgesic effects wearing off faster, and people needing higher dosages to reach the analgesic effects. It is commonly misused or used excessively because people take too much in order to relieve their pain faster. Taking more of the drug does increase its efficacy but it also increases its addictive properties. When tolerance does develop, people are often forced to seek out more and more Vicodin, but as it is a controlled substance, there are regulations on how much can be legally prescribed. This often leads to societal/legal consequences as people will visit many doctors and/or try to buy the drug illegally. The withdrawal effects of Vicodin include things such as insomnia, night sweats, tremors, and agitation. People looking for the secondary effects of the drug often abuse many forms of prescription drugs. Vicodin is a potentially addictive drug, specifically due to the hydrocodone in it.Some people have reported using hydrocodone-containing products to help them calm down and focus. There have been reports of severe hearing loss and deafness associated with the abuse of Vicodin. If taken at the normal prescribed dosages, the risk of hearing loss is very minimal. It is interesting to note that in people who use these drugs for recreational purposes there are sex differences. Women tend to feel less “in control on their thoughts” and more report, “feeling bad” more often than men. People given logic examinations while under the influence of this drug showed an increase in incorrect answers, but spent more time on the exams. This suggests that this drug may be aiding in attention. It is again important to note that clinically prescribed dosages
